Can You Really Learn to Do a Headstand? What Nobody Tells You

“I’m not strong enough.”

“I’m too stiff.”

“I’ve been practising yoga for years and I still can’t do a headstand.”

If any of these thoughts have crossed your mind, you’re definitely not alone.

I hear them all the time.

And I want to tell you something that might surprise you:

You don't need to be super strong, super flexible or an advanced yogi to learn a headstand.

But you do need to understand what your body actually needs — and how to practise it.

Headstand isn't just about strength

Yes, strength matters.

Your shoulders, arms, core and legs all need to work together to support you upside down.

But you don't need to be incredibly strong before you start.

In fact, good technique can make a huge difference.

Rather than trying to muscle your way into a headstand, you learn how to use your hands, shoulders and core to create stability and control.

So instead of asking, “Am I strong enough?”, try asking:

“What strength do I need to develop?”

That's a much more useful question.

And what about flexibility?

You don't need to be able to touch your toes or put your legs behind your head!

Some mobility — particularly through the shoulders, hips and hamstrings — can certainly make headstand easier.

But you don't need to become a super-flexible yogi first.

You can work on the specific mobility you need as you learn the skill.

And sometimes, improving that mobility is exactly what helps your headstand start to feel possible.

There's another piece people often forget...

Confidence.

Going upside down can feel scary.

Your body might be perfectly capable of doing something, but your brain says:

“Nope. We're staying down here!”

Learning headstand is partly about teaching your body and nervous system that being upside down can be safe and controlled.

That's why I don't believe in simply telling someone to “kick up” and hoping for the best.

There are steps.

There are preparations.

And there is a progression.

You don't need to be “ready”

This is probably the biggest thing I want you to take away.

You don't need to wait until you're stronger.

You don't need to wait until you're more flexible.

And you don't need to wait until you've been practising yoga for another five years.

You can start from where you are.

Maybe your hamstrings are tight.

Maybe your shoulders need strengthening.

Maybe you've never managed to get your feet off the floor.

Or maybe you've tried headstand before and it felt completely impossible.

That's okay.

It simply tells us where to begin.

Come and try it with me

If you've always been curious about headstand but thought “that's not for me”, I'd love you to join me for my ONLINE Headstand with Confidence Course starting on Sunday the 18th October.

We'll break headstand down into manageable steps, look at the preparation your body needs and, most importantly, take away some of the mystery and fear around going upside down.

You don't need to be able to do a headstand already.

Just come with an open mind and a willingness to try.

And who knows?

You might discover that headstand isn't something you can't do.

You just haven't learned how yet.

If you enjoy the workshop and want to keep going, I'll also show you how you can continue your practice with my Headstand with Confidence online course.

I’d love to see you upside down!
